Project Description

Guide to the National Nuclear Regulator Act

South Africa has a National Nuclear Regulator (NNR) whose role it is to protect people, property, and the environment against nuclear damage. They do it by establishing safety standards and regulatory practices.

The brief

The NNR approached us to create:

  • a video explaining their responsibilities;
  • an infographic explaining their compliance responsibilities;
  • an infographic explaining how nuclear licenses are granted; and
  • a user-friendly guide to the National Nuclear Regulator Act.

The challenge

Our challenge was balancing depth and simplicity to cater to a diverse audience. We wanted the information to be accessible to the public, to environmental groups, and to young people interested in exploring a career in science. We also wanted the information to be interesting to people who understood the content well but who would want to use it as a quick reference guide, like NNR employees or members of parliament.

The process

First, we met with the NNR to discuss their objectives. We wanted to understand what they thought the most important messages were so that we could best communicate them.

Then we put together a team consisting of:

  • a lawyer who understands how to interpret legislation and present it in an interesting way;
  • an information designer who understands information architecture;
  • our client as a subject matter expert; and
  • a graphic design and animation team to create a cohesive look across all the deliverables.

We developed the content and the look and feel collaboratively with the client. With their guidance as subject matter experts, we were able to focus on the most important information and package it in a way that it is accessible and exciting for the reader.

The results

We created different assets that:

  • positions the Regulator as a ‘friend of the people’;
  • educates and empower readers with a better understanding of the role of the Regulator; and
  • serves as reference point for the NNR when they prepare public-facing communication.
