Project Description
African Rainbow Minerals POPIA video
The brief
African Rainbow Minerals (ARM) is a leading South African mining and minerals company with employees from different backgrounds and different reading levels. They asked Hey Plain Jane and Novation to create a video communicating how the Protection of Personal Information Act (POPIA) affects everyone at ARM. They wanted the employees to know they could trust the company to protect their personal information. ARM also wanted employees to understand that they had responsibilities with ARM’s personal information.
The challenge
There are a couple of things everyone has in common, like suffering from information overload. And, as a result, people struggle with an ever-shortening attention span. Research shows that people lose interest after two minutes of watching an online video – even if they’re interested in the topic. Our challenge was to create a short, engaging, less-than-two-minute video about POPIA (snore).
We focused on what ARM employees must know – when the company collects personal information, what they do with it, and how they protect it. We also focused on how employees could, and should, protect the company’s information.
The process
We love a good collaboration. We worked with the client to develop a script that they were happy with. Then, together with our go-to videographers at Storyground, we developed a style guide that included a colour palette and some ideas for visuals.
With the client happy with the look and feel, we got going with an animatic and then, the final animation. We included the client at every stage of developing the video to make sure that they were 100% happy with the result.
The results
We created a fun and engaging video that was 1 minute and 39 seconds long. We incorporated visual elements that the audience would find familiar and a strong, simple, memorable message. We’ll keep checking in on the project three and six months down the line to ensure that it has the impact we planned for.
